Turning writing inside out


The function and role of writing plays an important part in this performance. Writing, in fact, is usually conceived as an informative tool or as a device to communicate but above all the primordial and most essential aspect of writing is its function to ‘remember’ and to ‘witness‘. Thus, writing might be understood as an extension of human memory or maybe just a way to forget unessential notions.

The performance begins when the GB Group will gently invite the audience, to write down their names on a white canvas. Moving the artwork upside down and indicating the audience were to write, two letters appear, composed of all the names written in lines:‘E.U.‘

It is possible that the work of art ‘E.U.‘ comes to life thanks to the participants’ affirmations rather than their names. It might seem that the people at the performance do not write down their names but rather they make a statement about their own identities. This affirmation of identity is strengthened by the presence of people witnessing it.‘E.U.‘ is a living object, a courageous work of art that is ready to lose everything in the course of time. The aim of this living object is not to be eternal, but rather it attempts to concretely influence the lives of the people close to it, the people who live with it.

Ultimately, the GB Group wishes to create occasions for coincidence.

Nobody can produce coincidences, but the GB Group is sure they can help them happen. By instructing the owner of ‘E.U.‘ to retrace all the names composing the art-work, using each time a bigger pen-tip, the owner will, in the end, make all those names unrecognizable and they will appear as unreadable ink stains.

Over time the art-work ‘E.U.‘ will become only a canvas with one letter written on it, precisely ‘E.U.‘

Once the owner of ‘E.U.‘ will have completed his task to retrace all the participants’ names, these very names will permeate through the proprietor’s mind. He will be subconsciously influenced by those names which will ultimately become unreadable.
